Robotics Student Seminar

Denis Tra Bi, Jallalah Abdullah, Gireesh Suresh and Jill Granados
Computer Science Department
Advisor: Professor Dana Nau

Abstract

The objective of Swarmathon is to code virtual robots and create an algorithm that collects as many cubes as possible within an area and return them to a center base. Depending if you're doing the virtual or physical Swarmathon competition, some aspects change. We will be doing the virtual competition, which means all the robots exist in an entirely virtual environment.

The virtual simulation relies on ROS (robot operating system) and runs on a Linux operating system, Ubuntu. The code itself is in C++. We used the IDE QTCreator to edit the code.

The virtual competition primarily helps strengthen coding and math skills, so anyone who is in CMSC or studies math would be the best fit.

About the Robotics Student Seminars

The Robotics Student Seminars at the University of Maryland College Park are a student-run series of talks given by current robotics students.

The purpose of these talks is to:

  • Encourage interaction between Robotics students from different subfields;
  • Provide an opportunity for Robotics students to be aware of and possibly get involved in the research their peers are conducting;
  • Provide an opportunity for Robotics students to receive feedback on their current research;
  • Provide speaking opportunities for Robotics students.
