Title: Microwave Enabled Fabrication of Carbon Nanomaterials and Metal Hybrids: Unique Structures and Applications

Abstract:

Microwave chemistry has been well-known for high speed synthesis, shortening reaction times from days to minutes, even to seconds. Even though the observed rate enhancements have been ascribed to purely thermal/kinetic effects, i.e., a consequence of high local temperatures which can be attained rapidly, these unique effects have been enabled selective fabrication of desired products. In this talk, several examples will be delivered to discuss the special role of microwave chemistry in controlled fabrication of graphene derivatives, heteroatom doped porous carbon nanomaterials, and their metal nanohybrids. The unique electronic and geometric structures of these materials thus fabricated will be discussed and compared with those fabricated via traditional heating approaches. Their application in heterogenous catalysis and batteries will be presented. Finally, I would also share with you our recent exploration in using in-situ electrochemical controlled scanning probe microscopy for battery studies.
