Whiting-Turner Lecture featuring Matthew Dowling from Medcura gel-e: The Commercialization Story of a Novel Biomaterial Developed at the Clark School - Medcura Chief Scientific Officer and Co-Founder Matthew Dowling Ph.D. ’10 will discuss the commercialization of the novel technology platform called gel-e (sounds like “jelly,” as the material looks like a clear jelly), first developed at the Clark School. After earning his doctorate in bioengineering from UMD, Dowling formed Medcura, funding it entirely from research grants for its initial years. As an early-stage CEO, Matt shepherded the technology to its first U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance and issued patents before bringing on a commercial team and financing. Eventually, the hemostatic, antibacterial gel technology was picked up by a nationwide distributor and is now sold at CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart, and on Amazon. The technology behind Medcura’s Rapid-Seal, which stops bleeding in seconds, was born in Clark School Professor Srinivasa Raghavan’s lab, where Raghavan and his team study the spontaneous self-assembly of molecules and nanoparticles and use this behavior to create new “smart” materials. Dowling will discuss lessons learned about commercializing an engineering innovation, and how he applies his classroom and lab work to his career.
