Title: Radiation hardness of halide perovskites

Abstract: Many of the challenges experienced by halide perovskite materials, such as degradation caused by exposure to oxygen or water, limit their usage in ordinary environments. However, this type of solar cell would have to survive radiation exposure to operate in space. I will present our ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations for different halide perovskites to investigate their response to low-energy radiation. The simulations help estimate non-ionizing radiation damage in materials, the primary degrader of optoelectronic properties under radiation environments. These efforts would allow for a better understanding of the radiation hardness of materials.

Bio: Dr. Borunda is an Associate Professor of Physics and Associate Dean and Senior Inclusion Officer of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oklahoma State University. He earned a B.S. degree from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2003 and his Ph.D. in Physics from Texas A&M University in 2008. Dr. Borunda spent almost four years as a postdoctoral research associate at Harvard University. In September 2012, he became a faculty member of the physics department at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Borunda is enthusiastic about working towards creating a more inclusive environment. He works extensively with minority students through the OK-LSAMP program and as faculty advisor of OSU’s SACNAS chapter. He is a board member (and current vice president) of the National Society of Hispanic Physicists and chair-elect of the Forum of Diversity and Inclusion of the American Physical Society.
