MSE Seminar: Dr. Sreeramamurthy Ankem, UMD Recent Advances in Structure/Property Relationships of Titanium Alloys and Steels Abstract: In this seminar, three developments related to titanium alloys and steels will be presented. The first development is related to time dependent deformation twinning mechanism in titanium alloys. It is traditionally believed that twinning occurs at the speed of sound in solids. But, there are circumstances where the twin growth rate can be many orders of magnitude lower than the speed of sound in solids. The corresponding crystallographic models and the effect of this time dependent twinning on mechanical properties will be presented. The second development is related to the utilization of Finite Element Modelling (FEM) to determine optimal porosities in the implant for maximum life of titanium biomedical implants. It will be shown that subsurface continuous porosity is ideal. The last development is related to H Y (High yield Strength) steels. Normally, It is difficult to increase ductility without reducing strength. It will be shown that the low temperature ductility of HY 80 can be increased without a significant reduction in strength.
