The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has named Clark School Dean Darryll Pines a fellow for 2010. Dean Pines came to the University of Maryland in 1995 as an assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering. From 2003-2006, Dr. Pines served as a program manager for the Tactical Technology Office ad Defense Sciences of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). Upon his return to the University of Maryland, College Park Dr. Pines served as the chair of the Department of Aerospace Engineering from 2006-2009 before assuming leadership of the Clark School as its dean in January of 2009.
The distinction of fellow is conferred by AIAA and its board of directors upon outstanding members of the Institute who have made notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics. Dean Pines was nominated to fellowship status by his colleagues in the department, including, Dr. Inderjit chopra, the director of the Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center. Among Dean Pines' many accomplishments he has been credited for fostering innovation, academic and research excellence, strong technical program management, strong leadership, and for building collegiality among faculty, students and staff.
Fellows of AIAA are classified as individuals of distinction in aeronautics or astronautics who have made notable valuable contributions to the aerospace arts, sciences, or technologies. Nominees are upgraded from Associate Fellowship status. Dean Pines' upgrade to AIAA Fellow marks yet another distinction in his career, yet his focus remains on developing the A. James Clark College of Engineering's full potential.
Presentation of the new Fellows and Honorary Fellows will take place at the AIAA Aerospace Spotlight Awards Gala on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, in Washington D.C.
